The Casbah of Algiers – The Historic Soul of the City
The Casbah of Algiers (Arabic: القصبة) is the oldest district of the city and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Located on a hillside above the port, the Casbah is a maze of narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, small shops, craft workshops, and traditional inner courtyards.
More than just an architectural gem, the Casbah is a lively neighborhood where people live, work, and run local businesses – especially small shops, cafés, and street vendors. It represents Algeria’s deep cultural roots and its spirit of resistance.
Today, the Casbah holds enormous cultural and economic potential – a perfect place for visionary projects like the AFAI Café, which connects innovation with history.
